IWEDIA Middleware proposes a portfolio of market solutions that covers a wide range of devices and configurations, and is applicable to:

  • Digital Ready TV sets (DRTV) and Set-Top Boxes (STB)
  • Both Free2Air and security-enabled devices (DVB-CI, CI Plus, embedded CAS)
  • Standard Definition (SD) and High Definition (HD) terminals
  • Low-end through to high-end configurations: Zapper, Media Centre (USB), ‘PVR Ready’ (USB), Embedded PVR

The Comedia Editions are made of a middleware layer (system layer) called Comedia, that sits in between the underlying platform and the end user applications of the device.

A high-level, service-oriented API (called “Comedia Control and Command” or “CoCoCo”) exposes the services provided by the middleware to the applications through a set of functions to be called and a collection of events to be handled.

A low-level, driver-oriented API (called “Comedia Hardware Abstraction Layer” or “CHAL”) defines the way the underlying platform (that is to say the operating system and the hardware drivers) is expected to behave through a set of functions and events to be provided by the platform.

The end user applications may be:

  • resident, designed with Maestro Authoring Tool and handled by Maestro Player
  • or broadcast, and handled by the MHEG-5 engine
