A collection of turnkey master software targeted at next-generation digital, high-def and connected iDTV sets

Tomorrow’s TV set will be a convergent device incorporing analogue and digital, SD and HD, broadcast and broadband. And above all, it will be a connected terminal, interconnecting a variety of digital and analogue audiovisual devices, and linked to various broadcast networks and to both the home network and the Internet.

The following diagram illustrates the central position of the tomorrow’s TV set within the home network.

 

With the aim of providing the master software of an integrated Digital TV (iDTV) set which embraces the whole set of features of such a device, IWEDIA Middleware has integrated together the best of breed software components that were successfully deployed in the field within the variety of its Comedia Editions for both digital ready TV sets (analogue TV sets in which digital modules have been plugged in) and set-top boxes.

These software components that are covering SD and HD digital TV reception and signaling, front panel and remote control unit management, teletext and MHEG-5 decoding, EPG, software upgrade, DVB-CI and CI Plus, multimedia content browsing and rendering, USB connectivity, PVR capabilities, DLNA/UPnP networking, etc., have been completed with specific software modules for the installation and management of analogue services, the management of a cluster of audiovisual input/output, Picture in Picture (PiP), Picture and Picture (PaP), and Picture and Text (PaT) management, the image and sound adjustments, etc.

The result is a collection of turnkey master software (i.e. a collection of Comedia Editions) for iDTVs providing a global software solution for a variety of hybrid (analogue and digital), SD and HD iDTV configurations, from the simple zapper and media player (over USB and/or the home network) through to the PVR and the digital media server.

The best of the Web on TV

In our view, tomorrow’s connected TV is not only a multimedia hub within the home network but also a link to the Internet (via a home gateway) to access to best of the Web. From the comfort of its sofa and using its remote control, the viewer will be in a position to access to most popular online services while keeping on watching its favourite TV show.

Accessible services will be existing services for PC repurposed for a TV friendly rendering and interaction. The underlying business model is likely to be based on advertising revenues.

Available services will range from information retrieval services (news, weather forecast, stock exchange data, etc.) to social networking services (e.g. Facebook) through to video and audio on demand, photo sharing, TV guide, and catch up TV services.
